How to offer clients their first class for free (or a discount)
Offering a free or discounted first class is a powerful way to attract new clients and reduce the barrier to entry. It allows potential customers to experience your teaching style and class format before committing to packages or memberships. This strategy can help you:
- Attract new clients who might be hesitant to commit without trying your class first
- Build trust by letting clients experience your service risk-free
- Increase conversions from trial classes to regular bookings
- Stand out from competitors who require upfront payment
Classta offers two flexible options for offering first-class discounts, each suited to different business models.
Option 1: Single Class Price with "One Use Per Customer" Restriction
This option is ideal if you want to offer a trial class before commitment, then encourage clients to purchase packages or memberships for regular bookings.
How It Works
When you set a single class price and enable the "one use per customer" option, clients can book that class once at the single class rate. After their first booking, they'll need to use packages or memberships for future bookings.
Best for:
- Instructors who want to offer a low-cost trial before clients commit to packages
- Businesses where single classes are priced lower than package rates
- Encouraging clients to move from trial to commitment-based pricing
Setting It Up
- Go to your Admin page and navigate to the class you want to offer as a trial
- In the Pricing section, set a Single Class Price (this can be £0 for free, or a discounted amount)
- Check the box that says "Limit to one single [class] booking per customer (packages not restricted)"
- Save your changes
When clients book this class, they'll see the single class option with a note indicating "1 use per customer." After they've used their one-time single booking, they'll need to purchase a package or membership to continue booking.
Option 2: 100% Discount Coupon with Per-User Limit
This option gives you more flexibility in how you promote and distribute your first-class offer. You can share the coupon code through social media, email campaigns, or even display it prominently on your booking page.
How It Works
Create a discount coupon set to 100% off with a per-user limit of 1. This ensures each client can only use the coupon once, making it perfect for first-class offers. You can then share this coupon code with new clients through various channels.
Best for:
- Instructors who want to actively promote their first-class offer
- Businesses that want to track which marketing channels bring in new clients
- Offering discounts across multiple classes or all classes
Setting It Up
- Go to your Admin page and click on Coupons
- Click Create New Coupon
- Fill in the coupon details:
- Name: Give it a descriptive name like "First Class Free"
- Code: Create an easy-to-remember code (e.g., "FIRSTFREE" or "NEWCLIENT")
- Discount Type: Select Percentage
- Discount Value: Enter 100
- Per-User Limit: Enter 1 (this ensures each client can only use it once)
- Usage Limit (optional): You can set a total usage limit if you want to cap how many people can use it overall
- Choose whether the coupon applies to All Classes or Selected Classes
- Save the coupon
Promoting Your Coupon
Once you've created your coupon, you can promote it in several ways:
Social Media & Email:
- Share the coupon code in your social media posts
- Include it in welcome emails to new subscribers
- Mention it in your email newsletter
Booking Page:
- Add the coupon code to your Booking Page Tagline in Settings (appears at the top of your booking page)
- Mention it in your class descriptions
- Create a banner or announcement on your booking page
In Settings:
- Go to Settings in your Admin page
- Find the Booking Page Tagline field
- Add text like: "New clients: Use code FIRSTFREE for your first class free!"
- This will appear at the top of your booking page, making it visible to all visitors
Which Option Should You Choose?
Choose Option 1 if:
- You want a simple, automatic first-class offer
- Single class pricing is already part of your business model
- You want to encourage clients to move to packages after their trial
Choose Option 2 if:
- You want to actively promote your first-class offer through marketing
- You want flexibility to change or expire the offer
- You want to track which marketing channels are most effective
- You want to offer the discount across multiple or all classes
Both options ensure that each client can only take advantage of your first-class offer once, protecting your business while still attracting new customers.
Tips for Success
- Follow up: After a client uses their free/discounted first class, send them a follow-up email asking about their experience and offering a package or membership
- Set expectations: Make it clear in your class descriptions or communications that this is a one-time offer
- Track results: Monitor which option brings in more new clients and converts better to regular bookings
- Combine strategies: You can use both options for different classes or at different times to test what works best for your business
